Melbourne is widely regarded as one of the most liveable cities in the world, consistently ranking near the top of global quality-of-life surveys. Located in the south-eastern corner of Australia, it is home to more than five million people and serves as the capital of the state of Victoria. The city is known for its diverse culture, thriving arts scene, and a passion for sport that is woven into everyday life.

The city's economy is one of the strongest in Australia. Finance, technology, education, and healthcare are among the leading sectors, and Melbourne is home to the headquarters of many of Australia's largest companies. Its universities attract students from around the world, making it a significant centre for international education.

Public transport in Melbourne is extensive. Trains, trams, and buses connect the city centre with the outer suburbs, and the iconic blue trams that run through the central business district are free of charge within the designated free tram zone. Cycling infrastructure has expanded significantly in recent years, with dedicated lanes throughout many inner-city neighbourhoods.

Housing costs have risen considerably over the past decade, and affordability is a growing concern for many residents. However, the city offers a wide range of accommodation options across its many distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own character and community atmosphere. From the lively cafes of Fitzroy to the waterfront dining of Southbank, Melbourne rewards exploration.

The global transition to renewable energy sources is accelerating. Solar and wind power have grown at rates that exceed the projections of most energy analysts, driven by dramatic falls in the cost of technology. The cost of solar photovoltaic electricity has fallen by more than 90 percent over the past decade, making it now the cheapest source of new electricity generation in a large and growing number of countries.

Despite this progress, fossil fuels continue to dominate global energy supply. Coal, oil, and natural gas together account for approximately 80 percent of the world's primary energy consumption. Replacing this volume of energy with renewable sources presents enormous logistical and infrastructural challenges, particularly in sectors such as heavy industry, shipping, and aviation, where electrification remains technically difficult.

Energy storage is one of the most critical challenges facing the transition. Solar and wind power are intermittent — they generate electricity only when the sun shines or the wind blows. Without sufficient storage capacity, electricity grids struggle to maintain reliable supply when generation falls short of demand. Battery technology has improved significantly in recent years, but storing electricity at the scale required for national grids remains expensive and technically demanding.

Policy frameworks play a decisive role in shaping the pace of the energy transition. Carbon pricing mechanisms, subsidies for renewable energy, and regulations phasing out fossil fuel technologies all influence investment decisions. Countries that have implemented strong and consistent policy frameworks — including Denmark, Germany, and increasingly China — have made the most rapid progress in transitioning their energy systems.
